Shogenji clinches maiden JGTO title at weather-hit Token Homemate Cup

Tatsunori Shogenji’s three-day total of 14-under-par 199 was enough to get him across the finishing line after inclement weather forced the season-opening Token Homemate Cup to be reduced to 54 holes on Sunday.
 
The 26-year-old had posted a third round five-under-par 66 to establish a three-shot advantage over Ren Yonezawa. However, heavy rainfall led to unplayable course conditions at Token Tado Country Club in the morning, leading tournament officials to cancel the fourth round and declare Shogenji the winner.
 
Despite the circumstances, victory was particularly sweet for Shogenji, who finished runner-up at the same event last year. Demonstrating remarkable consistency, he dropped only two shots over 54 holes and was delighted to have made his JGTO breakthrough.
 
“I’m just really happy to have finally won. Even though I didn’t play today, everyone congratulated me and I feel like I’ve truly arrived," said Shogenji.
 
His breakthrough is also a validation of his hard work and self-belief that finally paid off after a string of close calls last year.
 
“There were so many tournaments I couldn’t win. Even in Asia, I had my opportunities but just couldn’t get the job done. I was really seeking answers, and this win finally tells me I’m heading in the right direction and has certainly given me confidence,” added Shogenji.
